Botanical (latin) name: Eleagus augustafolia
Zone 2

Description:
The Russian Olive is a striking medium size tree with elongated leaves that range from silver to greyish green. A perfect contrast tree for in front of a dark background, these trees look stellar planted on the south side of a row of mature spruce or balsam fir.

The Russian Olive not only has alternatively coloured leaves but its small, tubular flowers, almost invisible amongst the leaves pump out some of the sweetest fragrance know to man.

The Russian Olive likes it sunny and dry and grows best on well drained sandy loam. It does very poorly in clay soils that are subject to periodic flooding and will quickly die in water-logged soils.

Contrary to the natural instincts of many gardeners, it is very important to NOT over-water or over-fertilize, as these conditions produce soft, weak growth that is susceptible to viral, bacterial and insect infestation.
