Description:
although the American Elm tree is a majestic wide spreading shade tree its mature size is usually too big for most urban and suburban yards, but look very impressive in large open areas on farms or acreages. Aside from the size issue, the biggest problem with the American Elm is their susceptability to Dutch Elm Disease (DED). While the Edmonton area is still DED free, other cities and municipalities have experienced mortalities of up to 90%. Not surprisingly the death and removal of one of these massive trees leaves a very large hole in the landscape. Although the American Elm grows best on rich well drained soils, they tend to flourish where there is standing water in the spring. The American Elm is one of the few trees where fall pruning is not only recommended, but is actually illegal to prune at any other time. |
