Description:
The Charles Joly lilac is considered among the very best of the spring blooming lilacs. It features fragrant double purple-red flowers in upright panicles, upright multi-stemmed habit and a tendancy to sucker. The dark green heart-shaped leaves provide an excellent visual barrier but do not develop any appreciable fall colour. The seeds and bark are not ornamentally significant. Charles Joly Lilac is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively coarse texture can be used as a background for other landscape plants with finer foliage. This is a moderate maintenance shrub that will require regular care and upkeep, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies, but does not attract deer. The Charles Joly Lilac will grow to be about 10 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 feet. It tends to be a little leggy, with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.
