Description:
Prunus maackii, commonly called the Manchurian cherry or Amur chokecherry, is a species of cherry native to Korea and both banks of the Amur River, in Manchuria in northeastern China, and Amur Oblast and Primorye in southeastern Russia. The Amur cherry grows best in moist well drained soils that receive full sunlight. Although the Amur cherry can tolerate extreme cold, it does very poorly in high heat conditions. The innocuous flowers are non fragrant and produce tiny (5mm)cherries that are wolfed down by many species of songbirds The Goldrush Amur Cherry is a fast growing hybrid cultivar selected for improved resistance to frost cracking. The mature size is about 8m (25ft) tall by about 6m (20ft)wide. The tree has dark green foliage and coppery orange bark for winter colour. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 4 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more. |
