Description:
White Spruce has a uniform conical crown with branches that spread or droop slightly and extend to the ground. This tree grows in a surprising number of locations but prefers moist, well drained, silty soil in an area that is partly shaded and is best grown in the north or east row of a multiple row shelter belt. Trees planted in a single row or a south or west facing row seem to take forever before they start reaching any height. Trees grown in the full sun will only add 1 foot of height or less per year while trees grown on the north side of a building receiving the rainwater from the roof can grow as much a 4 feet in a single year. Because of its ability to thrive in a variety of climates and soil types, the white spruce is widely regarded as the conifer of choice in many shelter belts in northern Canada. |
